Experience

2004-present

The Technology Partnership (TTP)
I am a senior consultant at TTP, working in communications, wireless and embedded systems. Headquartered in Melbourn near Cambridge, TTP is Europe's leading independent technology development and licensing company.

2007-present

Cambridge Wireless
I co-champion the Short-range wireless special interest group, which focuses on the underlying technologies, and the applications, of short-range wireless links. The group's scope encompasses standards and areas such as Bluetooth, Near-Field Communications (NFC), Ultra Wide-Band (UWB), WiFi and Zigbee, typically in the ISM bands.

2006-present

Joint Colleges Nursery (JCN)
Director and trustee of this parent-run charity in Cambridge.

2000-2004

Psytechnics Limited
I co-founded Psytechnics in 2000 with venture capital investment. The company develops speech and video quality assessment products for testing, optimising and monitoring telecommunications networks. Until 2003 I was Technology Architect, contributing to all of the company's products, particularly at the design phase and with implementation of speech and signal processing algorithms. I led several major research projects including two international collaborations on PESQ (ITU-T P.862) and P.AAM.

From 2003 I was Research Manager, leading projects including speech quality performance of mobile handsets and networks, intrusive and non-intrusive video quality assessment and mobile applications. After seeing Psytechnics through to successful completion of its 3rd round of venture funding, I resigned to pursue a new career direction, but remain a shareholder in the company.

1996-2000 BT Advanced Communications Research (BT Laboratories)
I worked on perceptual speech quality assessment, developing and licensing PAMS, the predecessor to PESQ, and filing patents on novel algorithms ranging from neural networks to dynamic conversational quality measurement. I developed research interests in voice over IP (VoIP), speech coding, audio coding, signal processing and communications.

1998-2004 Standards bodies: ITU-T study groups 12, 15; ETSI Speech Transmission Quality (STQ); Video quality experts group (VQEG)
